A Bed Of Roses (Well, Almost)

For many, the bedroom is not only the place for sleeping, dressing and grooming; it is also the setting for romance and passion. Not every bedroom is a sensual love-nest all the time - we all get sick, exhausted or not in the mood from time to time, and sometimes doing more than the basics seems more than it's worth. But for a special occasion, it's worth pulling out the stops and transforming the place where we spend a third of our day (or should) into a haven of romantic, erotic and sensual delight.

Begin with the bed. Crisp clean sheets (or soft, fluffy clean sheets) are pleasant to the skin. Satin sheets look luxurious and sensual but they have their disadvantages, namely that they are chilly on a cold night and satin-on-satin has very little friction, so once you have fallen asleep (or even before), the blankets can very easily slip off the side of the bed and leave you even cold. Cotton or flannelette is a better material choice for sheets, but the colour is up to you (red and crimson are considered the most effective for setting a mood of passion).1: Consider purchasing a water heater blanket. These blankets are fairly inexpensive, easy to install and provide an extra layer of insulation. A water heater blanket can reduce the cost of water heating by about 10%. So consider wrapping it up.A mink or plush throw or coverlet to the bed is also a nice, sensuous touch, as can sheepskins or fake furs draped across or around.4: If you're going to be away from home for a few days don't forget to turn off your water heater. If it's electric you can simply turn off the proper breaker switch. If it's powered by natural gas, turn off only the water heater and not the natural gas supply to the unit. This will allow you to simply switch the water heater back on without reigniting or relighting the pilot light. Before you put them on the bed, however, sprinkle a little scented talcum powder over the top of the mattress to delicately scent the bed. Don't use essential oils, as lovely and effective these are for creating a mood, as these can stain the sheets and the mattress. They are particularly unadvised if you have an electric blanket beneath the sheets. Also add a little talcum or perfume inside the pillowcases. You could also try sprinkling dried spices under the bottom sheet or inside the pillowcases, but make sure that they are ground rather than whole or they will be lumpy and uncomfortable. Making sure that the pillowcases match the sheets and the duvet or bedspread is a nice touch, but is not essential, as long as all the pillowcases match or complement each other.A mattress pad can make any mattress a great deal more comfortable. By placing extra padding on top of the regular mattress, softness can be added without removing the support of the mattress. These pads are usually one to three inches in depth and are made for several different materials which we will discuss.Egg crate- pad that looks as if you could store eggs in it. The foam hard depressions and raised areas that provide a bit more softness when placed over a hard mattress. The person who suffers from arthritis can frequently find sleeping much more comfortable with the addition of this type of pad on the mattress.Complete the setting with plenty of candles and soft music of your choice playing gently. If you have an electric blanket, turn it onto low. Also make sure that the room is a comfortable temperature - there is a reason why low temperatures are a metaphor for lack of passion. Do not forget to do a bit of floor cleaning as well, remove the unnecessary things so that the candles are the only ones on the floor.

Anything else? Well, that's entirely up to your imagination...
